G-Putt: Tapped In Micro Production Gourmet Cannabis Flower

Today seemed like a fantastic day to crawl out of my comfort zone smoking low THC medical cannabis, even for just a moment. That opportunity finally presented itself to me with a couple of grams of G-Putt’s newest gourmet cannabis effort named, Tapped In.

This opportunity is for something I don’t usually get the chance to smoke or even review. Because of the kindness of others, I’m able to offer my thoughts on the salubrious strain named Tapped In.

Rolling in over 27% THC, Tapped In is a potent reminder of why I love smoking cannabis that is clearly out of my normal wheelhouse. Not that I’m a “lightweight” on smoking cannabis. It’s something that I’ve enjoyed for nearly fifty years. I travel extensively for gourmet cannabis and enjoy indoor and outdoor-grown with my bias towards sun grown in natural soil, which dates back to having grown up on a Biodynamic farm in the 1960s and ’70s. I love the premise of terroir, a sense of place in both the cannabis field and the vineyard when I’m writing about wine. Much can be said for the taste of the place. That’s why my bias moves towards sun-grown cannabis.

The medical staff I usually have from the NJMMJ (med system) is decent enough, but they have a long way to go to catch up to California. In my somewhat biased opinion, this is because I was born and raised— and live — in NJ! They’ve come a long way, but not far enough yet. Not like the Tapped In varietal. This stuff really is the sprawl.

It’s refreshing to know that the fine cannabis that is woven into Tapped In is indoor grown with passion. You can taste it in every puff. The flowers ooze with what I call red fruits. I could be in Spain or the South of France with the exotic quality of the aromatics, shown in each generous pull. Gourmet, groomed, tended, cured. All done with love, this is obvious. I dig what I tried and will try to seek it out. This is the good stuff.

One suggestion would be to take a couple of dry hits through your pipe or joint before lighting the cannabis. Why? Well, to gain an appreciation for the terpenes. You’ll know my intent here when you smell the terps. It’s purifying.

Cannabis as good as Tapped In offers an entirely different experience, one with which I felt immediately comfortable. I wanted to share my thoughts as Tapped In is really my new and best cannabis friend.

Tapped In opened up my intellectual and considerate thoughts (what few that I have left!) and allowed me the honor of sharing my passion by writing the “WB” tasting notes of Tapped In; this is really high-quality cannabis and deserves even more compliments (In my opinion of course!)

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Early Spring rake-turned black loam in the nose spinning your inner dreams with opulent dollops of brown butter-soaked bread pudding. Each generous slice of this confection is covered with a smoky bourbon hard sauce.

This modern-day indoor-grown cannabis is philosophically different from the cannabis of the 1960s and 1970s that I grew up smoking. Possessing potent scents of candy sugar-dusted sizzling hot cream-filled donuts, each whiff of the perfectly cured and trimmed bud offers the unique experience of smelling the cannabis. This moment in time, just before it is ground in my Gemini grinder, then smoked. Jutting my nose into a small scenting jar that I use to gain an appreciation for the terroir, I immediately savored the earthy aromatics that wafted deeply into and up my nose. This precise moment in time led to a dollop of corn pudding covered in a tangle of cozy brown butter with a touch of petrol and a flurry of freshly grated nutmeg at the finish.

Ok, so it finishes sweet out of your nose if you exhale that way. With a touch of sizzled lemongrass and shallot, please.

Palate: The smoke itself is soft across the tongue, plunging down into the lungs. The art of curing is spot on; no coughing here, impressive indeed. Notes of Saturday night butterscotch sundaes and further sprinkles of bartender’s sugar (very, very fine sugar) predominate the path down the throat to neither region of the mind.

This groovy cannabis is elegant and potent, with splashes of my favorite, hot and spicy Pickett’s Ginger Syrup on the finish across my tongue. Impressive indeed.

Photo Credit: Zaul Zamora of Complete

Finish: Upon reaching the body, the effects take place very quickly with a richly warming sensation that creeps up from the base of my spine up to the places where time has been remembered and then forgotten again, like most of my memory, not really, but you get this concept. Tapped In is very analytical cannabis with the importance of deep tête-à-tête and the metaphysical unearthing of the inner self.

The High or the Stone: As we discussed above, the overall THC level is just north of 27 %, making it quite intriguing for the person who is chasing THC, in other words, looking only for high THC varietals. I think that Tapped In is world-class, exactly what they say it is. And yes, I get really blissful on just a couple of hits. This cannabis truly is Premium Indoor Cannabis Flower. They can also say expertly cured and perfectly trimmed, Premium Indoor Cannabis Flower. This cannabis really opens my mind, and I’m confident it will do the same for you. Tapped In will do exactly as you expect it to do. And that is to really get you intellectually charged, and yes, you will be masterfully stoned and have a really nice afternoon. Find some crispy Vietnamese/Thai style wings, make ‘em spicy, and then feast yourself to a memorable experience for yourself.

 Thank you. WB

The Future of CBD: $20 Billion in Sales by 2024

In case it wasn’t already evident, the CBD market is booming. Since the Farm Bill passed in 2018, CBD sales have been on the rapid climb, and they don’t show any signs of slowing down, leading many to ask just what the near future of CBD looks like.

In 2019, cannabis business intelligence firm, BDS Analytics, published their report on the growing CBD industry, along with their projection for where CBD will be by 2024. Even with CBD’s increasing popularity, the firm’s figure of $20 billion in sales by 2024 might sound shocking, but as CBD moves out of the dispensary and further into the mainstream it’s hard to deny that the market will only continue to grow. [1]

CBD in the Dispensary

The report provided a brief history of CBD, and it’s important to keep in mind that this popular cannabinoid didn’t just spring up overnight as the Farm Bill was passed. Instead, science has been aware of CBD since the 1940s. However, even by 1996, when California first legalized medical marijuana, not much was known about CBD. [1]

As time went on and medical consumption increased, so did the awareness of CBD and its therapeutic potential. With the maturation of the medical marijuana market came more research on both THC and CBD along with products featuring either or both cannabinoids in a medical context. By 2013, CBD was officially recognized for its ability to treat seizures, and five years later, the FDA approved the first CBD-derived medication for treating epilepsy. [1]

Still, CBD remained a product confined to medical marijuana dispensaries and, eventually, adult-use recreational dispensaries in states with legal cannabis sales. As such, it remained mostly underground until the passage of the Farm Bill. Shortly after the Farm Bill passed CBD products started popping up in smoke shops and awareness of the cannabinoid’s potential began to spread. According to BDS Analytics, 10 percent of dispensary sales in 2018 came from CBD, and those numbers only continued to grow. [1]

CBD in the Mainstream

There’s no way to say that CBD is an underground product anymore. With $1.9 billion in sales in only the first year of nationwide legalization, there’s no denying the compound’s popularity. If you account for the time it took in 2018 for people to become aware of CBD, that figure is impressive and the numbers have only grown from there. [1]

The most popular CBD products are infused items, like gummies, tinctures and topicals. In 2018, those products combined brought in over $1.3 billion in sales. It’s no secret that you can find CBD products in health food stores, vitamin shops, and even your local grocery store. [1] CBD’s mainstream status is apparent in the customer data on just who is buying CBD products. According to BDS Analytics, the average CBD consumer is 43 years old and educated with 40 percent of CBD consumers holding a college degree or higher. They also tend to be gainfully employed with 50 percent of CBD consumers working full time. Finally, there doesn’t appear to be much of a gender gap in the market with 55 percent of CBD consumers male and 45 percent female. [1]

The diversity in product categories that CBD enjoys is another indication of its mainstream appeal. In 2018, CBD’s debut year nationally, CBD products were represented in nine major categories. Even though the bulk of CBD sales fell into the wellness and beauty categories, CBD infused food and beverages as well as pet care products point to some serious potential for mainstream growth and a diversity of products. [1]

The Future of CBD Products

Looking ahead, BDS Analytics predicts growth in all of those product categories, though their share of the CBD market is projected to shift as the market matures. According to their report, by 2024, the wellness and beauty segments of the CBD market will lose some of their dominance, making way for growth in the food, confection, and beverage markets. Meanwhile, the market for CBD flower and vapes is expected to lose ground to the other more mainstream options. That, of course, is not to say that these markets will bring less in sales than they did in 2018. They’ll actually grow, but they’ll make up a smaller percentage of the overall CBD picture. [1]

This continued shift to the mainstream will bring with it other changes which will likely impact the market and the way in which it grows. BDS Analytics expects that the FDA will step in and formally regulate the CBD industry, providing universal guidelines for manufacturers to follow. Not only will formal FDA regulation provide a framework which could support growth in the food and beverage space, it will inspire greater consumer confidence. [1]

Whatever the future for CBD holds, it’s hard to imagine it not being bright. All indications point to rapid and continued growth across all CBD products and a strong continued push to the mainstream.

Creating Seasons Growing Cannabis Indoors

My inspiration for writing this article, creating seasons growing cannabis indoors, was an email I received. A grower asked me why I used a lighting photoperiod of 16/8 (16 hrs. ON/8 hrs. OFF), when I normally vegetate using 18/6, and flower using 12/12 photoperiods. During my reply he had an epiphany, he really “got” my methodology here and how it mimics Mother Nature. His skills just came up—wink.

Today, I want to do the same thing for any of you that don’t get this part of growing cannabis indoors. You have to understand a little bit about how your plants are perceiving things and why. So, I decided to lay it all out here and hopefully it will all come together for you by the end of the article. Let’s roll…

Why Create Seasons Growing Cannabis Indoors?

Okay peeps, here’s the part where we think like plants the best we can. If you were a plant, you would move in uber-slow-motion, so slow, that it is another dimension in which humans cannot see the movement of plants. Only over time can we see that they have grown (moved). Plants are much slower to react to things. Creating seasons is simply keeping them super happy and unconfused—proactively.

Full Spectrum Lights Like the 420h are Important as Well
Full Spectrum Lights Like the 420h are Important as Well

Cannabis plants only live (naturally per their genes) for less than a year, that’s their whole lifespan. In that time their main objectives are two-fold, and in two completely different growth modes, wholly.

  1. Grow leaves, stems, and roots rapidly to outcompete other plants, and to assimilate and store nutrients to use for flowering, while they are in vegetative stages of growth.
  2. Create flowers (calyxes, pistils, trichomes) for procreation, and resin, root growth continues, and different ratios of nutrients are sought after. Some leaf and stem growth continues. Stored nutrients are retrieved. All while they are in flowering stages.

Cannabis plants are either in vegetative growth mode, or flowering growth mode. They don’t do both at the same time well. They judge when it’s time to shift modes by their current day/night hours, and if the daylight hours are increasing or decreasing. Indoors we can manipulate that just fine using photoperiods. Plants follow a linear path from youngster, to adult, to mature adult, to flowering adult.

Why All This Matters
Your Plants are Happier Knowing Which Season They’re In
Your Plants are Happier Knowing Which Season They’re In

Plants take about 2-weeks to react visibly to photoperiod changes. Remember the stuff I said about how slow motion they are? Okay, so plants really like to prepare for things and know where they stand. For example, they will gauge their container resources once flowering begins to allow them to have enough food to last to the end. Their growth rates will conform. In vegetative mode they are more “risk takers” pushing the limits of their container resources. This is why I always transplant just before starting flowering. The plants have a whole new container to assess. They love that.

So, for my plants to be chugging along at full power with full happiness they need to know “what time of the year it is” according to their photoperiod trend. When plants have 16 hours a day of light, they have more energy to do things than growing under a 12/12 photoperiod. You savvy? Allowing your plants to prepare for seasonal changes allows them to have a much better transition into flowering. Mother Nature doesn’t go from 16 hours of daylight per day to 12 hours overnight. Plants have a lot of time to transition with lots of sunshine power to do it with. Or, in our case here growing cannabis indoors, lots of light power. It’s fine, we got that covered.

Photoperiods Growing Cannabis Indoors

What I do is transition my plants slowly through their own seasons by changing my photoperiods more subtly. Now, if you look at your regular outdoor daylight hours around springtime you will see they are actually well below 16/8 and closer to 12/12 actually. Let’s have a look at my lighting schedule next, then I’ll break it down for ya…

  1. Sprouts always get a 12/12 photoperiod for their first 10 days above ground.
  2. After those 10 days I use an 18/6 photoperiod.
  3. About 10 days before flowering, I use a 16/8 photoperiod.
  4. During flowering I use a 12/12 photoperiod, unless I am flowering heirloom/landrace sativas.
Using the Flowering Photoperiod to Sprout Allows Easy Sexing at 30 Days Old
Using the Flowering Photoperiod to Sprout Allows Easy Sexing at 30 Days Old

Here’s the bennies. Using the 12/12 photoperiod when the plants sprout, they aren’t sure what season it is yet. Once it hits 18/6 the light is increasing (trending upwards) so this makes the plants assume it is indeed springtime and all is well with their world. Not to mention this makes it easier to sex them at 30 days of age.

Photoperiods from Vegetative to Flowering

10-days before flowering time I change their photoperiod to 16/8, and this is before I transplant them. That loss of “daylight” hours for them signals them that fall has come and it’s time to start switching things up to go into flowering mode. Giving them that 16 hours of light, while still signaling them to begin flowering preparations, gives them lots more energy (per day) to make that transition. After those 10 days I transplant them and within a couple of days I switch them to a 12/12 photoperiod.

Creating seasons growing cannabis indoors is massively beneficial to reducing stress, better yields, higher quality, and greater resin production, along with overall plant health/heartiness. What’s not to love? ❤ Signaling your plants flowering time is approaching, along with signaling them as youngsters that it is indeed springtime, will give your plants a level of happiness you will for sure notice huge.

Never, ever, use a photoperiod of 24 hours ON at any stage of growth. If you did a 24/0 photoperiod to sprout them, then put them under an 18/6 photoperiod, they would “think” that fall was approaching, due to the loss of daylight hours, you dig? They would start their lives very confused and stressed that they may have sprouted too late in the year/season. That’s a HUGE problem, if you only live for one season.

Photoperiods for Cuttings
Cuttings Root Great and Happy Under a Vegging Photoperiod
Cuttings Root Great and Happy Under a Vegging Photoperiod

I use a standard vegging photoperiod of 18/6 to root cuttings. The only time you would want to use a different photoperiod would be if you were matching up clones for placement outdoors. Because any decrease in your daylight hours will signal the plant that “fall is approaching!” The plants begin switching into a whole new mode to prepare to flower. They use nutrients differently, and they change over to floral priorities. So, if you take a plant out from a cloner or a seedling plant, and have it vegging at an 18/6 photoperiod, and you then place that clone/plant outdoors, even though it’s actually springtime, the diminished daylight hours will signal the shift in the plant’s priorities. This is why you sometimes see plants try to flower when you first place them outdoors from indoors.

To do that indoor seedling plant to outdoor plant thing better you have two choices…

  1. Plant later and place the plant(s) out later in the season, like mid to late June. This is fine, don’t sweat it. Use the 12/12 for first 10 days, then to 15/9 or whatever matches your current daylight hours. Your actual daylight hours outdoors are in fact about 1 hour more than sunrise to sunset.
  2. Sprout at 12/12 and after ten days take them up to 14/10 or something, whatever is about equal to your current daylight hours, then place outdoors earlier in the season. This signals them it is indeed spring and their transition to outdoors will be seamless as the daylight hours continue to increase.

Afterword

Creating Seasons Growing Cannabis Indoors Pays Off Big
Creating Seasons Growing Cannabis Indoors Pays Off Big

Total darkness during the 10-day pre-flowering 16/8 photoperiod is required here. My vegging area is very dark during lights-out but not totally pitch black like the flowering area. Spectrum changes are also a thing when it comes to flowering, and you want your plants to be prepared if you are changing light spectrums to flower under. The simple solution is just put them under their flowering lights dropped from an 18/6 to a 16/8 photoperiod for 10 days before switching to your flowering photoperiod.

Growing cannabis indoors, clones always work much better in my experience. Seedling plants always do MUCH better outdoors in the ground than clones do. If you are using clones to place outdoors, try placing them outdoors later in the season and you’ll have less of that shift to try to flower for a minute.

Okay then, I’m outty for now and I’ll see ya back here next Tuesday baybee. Grab a copy of my TLO book and make sure to swing by KOS for some deadly seeds to start your uber-happy gardens with. How Small-Medium CBD Companies can Survive Alongside Mainstream Brands

CBD companies seem to be popping up left and right, and it is anyone’s guess which companies will survive the ebbs and flows that impact small-medium businesses, especially as the demand for CBD products levels out. So what can small-medium companies do when their customers can just as easily pick up CBD at Walmart?

Branding and Marketing

Small-medium CBD companies need to utilize smart branding concepts to drive interest in their products and differentiate themselves from the competition. There are various ways for a company to do this.

It is key to have a niche or angle that allows a CBD company to stand out from the crowd. Here are a few different things that a company can focus on to win over potential customers.

  • Make your product from high-quality organic materials
  • Use packaging that has a low carbon footprint and promote sustainable living
  • Find a niche and put some thought into what CBD product(s) to sell
  • Ensure your products undergo third-party testing
  • Give something back to your community
  • Promote diversity and acceptance within your business and beyond

The methods of growing hemp are various and sourcing products from farms that are local, grown organically, and/or use environmentally-friendly methods is key in the current culture. Another key decision for CBD companies to consider is which products to develop/sell. CBD products are everywhere from skin care to pet care. There is even a growing market for CBD-infused lubricants.

Focusing your brand on carrying/producing products that are clean, vegan and/or organic is important. It is not just hemp or CBD either; the sourcing of carrier oils and other ingredients in the product is also key.

Customer Interaction

Regardless of the fact that people can spend large amounts of time online, the majority are still looking for a human connection. Providing unique in-store or online content that connects to the customers’ interests and needs is crucial in growing a CBD business. Even though CBD has been “legal” since the passing of the Farm Bill in 2018, many people are still uneducated on this specific cannabinoid. Providing education for customers with both virtual and in-person modalities is one way that customers learn about the many different health benefits of CBD as well as how to decide which products are right for them.

CBD companies should also consider the different consumption methods customers can use to unlock the therapeutic benefits of CBD, and how those methods differ from each other. For example, it’s important for a customer who prefers using edibles or oil to be aware of the length of time — in comparison to vaping or smoking — these consumption methods take to work in the body.

Finally, there is the trust factor. It is well-known that Walmart is not carrying the best quality products. Consumers inherently know there is a quality difference between produce from Walmart and the local farmer’s market. CBD products are no different. With that said, there should be plenty of future opportunities for small-medium CBD companies to expose the inadequacies of mass producing corporations.

Dr. Greenthumbs x Gpen: Stealthy Sophisticated and Fun!

I don’t know about you, but even with newfound rules on smoking weed in public, I still look over my shoulder when smoking a joint around others. It’s just the smell that sets stigmatized folks off, and rightfully so with a forty-eight or so hours out of circulation that I experienced once in New York City. I learned how important it is not to antagonize others with weed smoke. Everyone should know this. The terminology in play here is called common sense. My correlation to this would be smoking a joint in the street in NYC. It still makes me nervous.

Imagine my appreciation when I received a brand spanking new Dr. Greenthumb x Gpen smoking device at my doorstep. This vaguely pickle-sized (and colored) cannabis smoking device was certainly an easy study. It came fully charged (a big plus), and it holds that first and subsequent charges through many sessions. The learning curve for this device was not outlandish. All I did was go to their YouTube and watch any number of videos with instructions that even a person of my age and intellectual capacity could appreciate under the influence of certain substances. This learning by watching methodology is definitely appreciated!

But back to the Gpen Dash. I’ve owned several of these over the years, and none have been as intuitive and smooth on my lungs as the new Dr. Greenthumb version. Filling with just about ¼ of a gram of nicely chopped flowers from my Gemini grinder is the start. Then I gently heat my secret blend in the Gpen to the lowest temperature. I’m catapulted into a realm of easy and nice, all at the same time. And that’s what the experience of smoking cannabis should be, at least for me. I want the experience to be simple and forthright. It’s important for this device to work silently and easily, just as it is important to be easy to clean and keep charged, ready for the next sesh.

What I like about this device:

It doesn’t get hot in my hand. That is a plus, so I’m not worried about setting my pocket on fire.

It does not shout the vapor as those “vape” cartridges do. The mist dissipates quickly and without much fanfare. A real plus when walking down the street when you don’t want to shout, look at me, I’m smoking weed. This device is especially easy to clean and keep clean. It doesn’t get mucked up with resin, nor does it change the flavor of your strain. The experience is pure and comfortable from start to finish.
I love mine. Fun to use and easy.

Cheers.

The Ballad Of Johnny Casali

The Ballad of Johnny Casali

A Hero of the Harvest

Written by Jake Robinson.

Here's to You Huckleberry!

I met Johnny Casali in person at The Harvest Ball in Santa Rosa, CA. We spoke on the phone for hours before my trip out west. Of course, I heard the story of Casali’s crazy journey through the criminal justice system; still, I was unsure what to expect.

I found a person I can only describe as a perpetual ray of light—a guy who radiates love, relentless positivity, and pure passion for the plant. I have never before encountered a person quite like Johnny Casali. In my eyes, he is a hero of the highest order—the true heart and soul of Southern Humboldt.

Casali has taught me many things. Chief among them is that no matter how terrible something appears to be on the surface, you must take it in stride and stay the course. Never give up, and never surrender.

My respect for Johnny means even more to me than the level of admiration I hold for him. I hope he comprehends how crucial a role he plays in the lives of so many other people, including my own.

All who visit his farm in Whitethorn quickly realize that Casali is laser-focused on doing everything he can to uplift, inspire, and empower his community as well the cannabis culture at large. The unjust series of events and overwhelmingly heartbreaking hurdles that Johnny overcame to become the man he is today proves that there is always hope for everyone.

To this day, Johnny’s guidance and stories still assist me in staying positive in the face of strife. If you know The Ballad of Johnny Casali, you will be able to see a silver lining in any objectively shitty situation. Truly a gift. Being able to count Casali as a friend is both an understatement and an honor. If you have a guy like Johnny in your corner, you have made it pretty fucking far.

"It will never be about just one of us, it will always be about all of us"

-Johnny Casali

Celebrating Womens History Month with Hemp Mushrooms and Woman-Owned: Heartland Farms

Four generations of women-owned and operated Heartland Farms is a USDA-certified industrial hemp farm in Northern Colorado- about 30 minutes away from Cheyenne, WY. They cultivate boutique hemp for consumption using regenerative farming methods. Their commitment is to remain transparent, compassionate, ethical, and fair. Heartland Farms believes that hemp can revolutionize the world, and they are here for the movement. Spending time with the farm and the family, I saw this passion early on.

Recently, Heartland Farms launched a line of apoptogenic mushroom products that include plants/fungi like:

  • Red Clover: estrogen booster
  • American Ginseng: decrease hot flashes
  • Shitake: immune system function and fertility
  • Cordyceps: supports kidneys, immune systems, and sexual health
  • Chaga: supports decreased inflammation
  • Lion’s Mane: supports nerve and cognition health

I had the pleasure of staying with the family to get to know them, and their 80 acres of land nurtured by the grace of femininity, supported by the love of family, and kissed by the sun. In this place, grandma, mom, daughter, granddaughter- all a part of the process that plants the seed, grow the flower, and creates the products known as the Heartland Farms product line

Heartland Farms believes that hemp can revolutionize the world, and they are here for the movement. Spending time with the farm and the family, I saw this passion early on, and so, when they told me about their CBD and Mushroom blend product line, I had to get the scoop.

About Heartland Farms: CBD and Mushroom Blends

Photo: Heartland Farms

“After our grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, we became consumed with information that showed how some women experience side effects of menopause may increase the risk for memory loss later in life. As a matriarchal family/business full of caregivers, we knew there had to be a better way to deal with the side effects of peri/menopause in order to improve brain health. Something better than a prescription. Something to help us recall our most precious memories.” – Heartland Farms

As noted above, Heartland Farms has blended powerful plants and fungi, for ultimate healing benefits, in various areas of the body. It’s no secret that nature provides the best medicine and so, creating blends that will naturally contribute toward physical and mental healing makes total sense. Below is insight into each category and blend.

Medicinal Mushroom Blend: Balance- For Menopause Symptoms

Includes:

  • Red Clover: a natural estrogen booster for the female body
  • American GinsengK: may decrease hot flashes
  • CBD: brings the body back to homeostasis (balance)
  • Shiitake contains Selenium: a mineral that is essential to cognitive and immune system function and fertility

Medicinal Mushroom Blend: Dream- Supports Healthy Sleep Cycles

Includes:

  • L-theanine: increases Alpha frequency in the brain. This signals that it is time to wind down with no drowsy effect.
  • Passion Flower: boosts levels of GABA (gammaaminobutyric acid) which reduces brain activity naturally.
  • CBN (Cannabinol): reduces pain and inflammation in the body, which relaxes the body to engage in the sleep cycle.

Medicinal Mushroom Blend: Immune Support- Boosts Immune System

Includes:

  • Elderberry: may stimulate the immune system via cytokine production.
  • Cordyceps mushrooms: promote the activation of the immune system (especially respiratory function). They are high in B vitamins, support kidney function, and promote sexual health.
  • CBD (Cannabidiol): supports the body’s ability to protect itself in cases of overactive immune system (autoimmune disorders).

Medicinal Mushroom Blend: Memory- For Brain Health

Includes:

  • Chaga Mushrooms: may reduce the production of cytokines (markers for inflammation).
  • Lion’s Mane Mushroom: increase the release of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the hippocampus, which supports nerve health and cognition. Also may regenerate damaged nerves.
  • CBD (Cannabidiol) facilitates neurogenesis (regrowth of new nerves).

In Closing

Heartland Farms does its part to educate the community on the power of hemp and mushroom healing. Through them, the baby boomer generation has had access to valuable insight and product sampling. It doesn’t stop there. They are also active and in regular attendance at farmers’ markets and local events educating the community. They do the work that our government fails to do- educate! Their voice is needed to advance natural remedies.

Letters to Rev Unique Cannabis Growing Issues

Welcome good green peeps! My “Letters” to Rev series is just a Q&A with questions I have gotten texted or emailed to me. Today we field three unique cannabis growing issues. Light intensity when sprouting, a mulch sourcing issue, and genetic expressions that are often Yin & Yang for reals.

Alright then earthlings, let’s rock and/or roll with today’s “Letters” to Rev…

Unique Cannabis Growing Issues, Question #1: Wattage for Sprouts?

FROM: Marius

“Hey Rev,

I bought your book, second edition, and retired my 1000-watt HPS and hydro setup. Now I have 2, 640-watt NextLight LEDs I haven’t turned on yet. I have 2 tumbling composters and my soil will be ready soon. As you know these lights are dimmable, 25%, 50%, etc. Should I use these lights at full power to sprout with? You have made this all fun again, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Marius.”

Rev’s Answer to Q1

Howdy Marius, you rock amigo, thank you for the support. It sounds like the real fun is about to begin. That sounds like one badass light you have there, and I myself run the 420h LED lights from NextLight, I love them dearly.

Myself, I would run those 640-watt lights at 50% power, at a height of about 2-feet above sprouts. Many people tend to want to sprout plants under weak-ass shop lights (fluorescents) or like LED lightbulbs. This is a big mistake, I think. You want your plants to grow up adapting to intense lighting like they will have during flowering. This allows them to already have the abilities in place to fully take advantage of powerful lighting. Yields are much better from plants raised under intense lighting.

As you likely know, using a 24/0 photoperiod is bad. If you sprout them under a photoperiod of 12/12 for their first 10 days above ground, you will be able to sex them easily at 30 days old. After they are 10 days above ground, simply up their photoperiod to 16/8 or 18/6. This works very well.

Unique Cannabis Growing Issues, Question #2: Mulching Options?

FROM: Ty

“Hi Rev! Hey so I have a question that is not so much a growing issue as it is a lack of mulch issue. I don’t really have any access to bark and I’m not big on shipping stuff. So, my question is, what else can I use as mulch besides bark? Can I use straw indoors? Also, how thick should the mulch be? Thank you for everything you do.”

Rev’s Answer to Q2

Hey Ty, yeah man you have a shitload of options here. You can use dried up cannabis leaves and chopped up cannabis stems as a great mulch. Dried and chopped up straw works fine, I myself would use alfalfa straw/hay here all dried and chopped up. Another old favorite is banana peels dried and chopped up. Hell man, you can use dried up lawn clippings if you want to—as long as the lawn hasn’t had pesticides or weird chemicals used on it.

Try Not Mulching a Couple of Plants and See the Difference for Yourself
Try Not Mulching a Couple of Plants and See the Difference for Yourself

The denser your mulch is the longer it will last. You need to replace the mulch as it decomposes. Something like lawn clippings will decompose much faster than say, cannabis stems would. I would keep my mulch layer about 2-inches thick. Raw things that haven’t been dried will temporarily rob some nitrogen from your container’s resources, so always let raw/wet things dry out totally before using for mulch.

Pumpkin, squash, or cantaloupe rinds all dried and chopped up makes excellent mulch. Avoid trying to use anything like gravel or lava rocks as mulch. This does not serve you well and the additional weight of your rocks on top will compact your soil causing other potential issues. Sand is another thing that doesn’t work very well.

Unique Cannabis Growing Issues, Question #3: Special Strains?

FROM: Tannie Buds

“Hiya Rev. We recently got some seeds from Denmark, and the plants have been growing for a whole run so far and we love them for their potency and flavors, but they are super hard to grow. One small problem like drought stress and they are put off their game for the rest of their lives. I notice these plants all have those hollow stems as well. My question is, can anything be done to help these plants be heartier? I mean, is there a way to run the soil amending or top dressings to counter this weakness?”

Rev’s Answer to Q3
When Selecting Females to Seed Up All Strengths and Weaknesses Should be Judged
When Selecting Females to Seed Up All Strengths and Weaknesses Should be Judged

High Tannie. First of all, the hollow stems by themselves are normally a good sign, I think. Whether this condition is caused by environment or genetics is debatable. I have heard carbon and/or boron have something to do with it … however, in my whole life I have never seen all the different plants/strains in a grow all express hollow stems. It’s fairly rare in my experience. So, while your plants may test after the fact to be deficient in something, that doesn’t mean your soil or methods are also deficient regarding those elements. Genetics differ in their strengths, some are better at acquiring, metabolizing, and storing nutrient elements than others.

Your newly gotten genetics sound to me like what I would call—fussy—and this is normally some kind of weakness or weaknesses, involving co-dependent expressions. As in, if you were to remove whatever causes the plants to be fussy, genetically, you would also lose key good expressions. One doesn’t happen without the other. You savvy?

There are no doubt special modifications you could make to accommodate these plants in particular. I have no idea what that may be. These changes could prove harmful to your normal/other plants. Some plants within a group of sprouts will always have issues with nutrients to some degree. It most normally hovers around a calcium, and/or potassium related issue with ability to uptake and/or metabolize/store.

Afterword

Using a soil like all naturally built TLO soil you won’t have any deficiencies in your soil or your plants. But some plants/varieties will express problems dealing with certain nutrients. They normally work it out within a couple of weeks. Sometimes (fairly rarely) they never do. Use those selection skills. Unique Cannabis Growing Issues in Long IBL Lines are More Common

I’m writing today with my index finger all slashed open and taped up with a paper towel, LoL. It’s challenging for an old, stoned guy. Get used to hurting yourselves, it happens a lot more as you get older in my experience hahahaha… I’m currently on the second to last chapter in the book—whew—closing in now fast baybee! Swing by KOS  …For some healthy, hearty, and potent cannabis seeds.

Kind of spooky watching the Corona get more and more contagious without getting more deadly. I play this game like once per month called Plague on my iPad. The whole big strategy to snuff the world’s population is to make your virus uber contagious without making it too dangerous, too fast. You make it deadly once it spreads super easily. Just sayin’, yikes. Heh heh. L8r G8rs… See ya back here next Tuesday for another article here at SKUNK baybee!

Celebrating Womens History Month with Woman-Owned: Sky High PEO

Woman-owned, led, and operated Sky High PEO is a different kind of PEO (professional employer organization). Sky High PEO is a full-service employment organization that helps various companies in various industries manage things like:

  • Human Resources
  • Staffing
  • Employee Benefits
  • Payroll processing
  • Risk Mitigation
  • Worker’s Compensation
  • 401K

Sky High PEO says: “regardless of the industry you’re in, or how many employees you have, we can provide the services you need to keep your employees satisfied and your business running smoothly.”

Sky High PEO services companies and industries all over the United States: east coast, midwest, west coast, and down south, and has offices all over those regions as well: Florida, California, Hawaii, Virginia, Canada, and Missouri, to name a few. I interviewed Veronica Lake, the founder, and CEO of Sky High PEO, to learn more about the company, the services, and how Sky High helps cannabis industry companies.

Get to Know Sky High PEO

In this Q & A, founder and CEO of Sky High PEO– Veronica Lake, tells all about the company and what she faced when launching. The interview has been slightly edited for clarity.

Prior to being the founder and CEO of Sky High PEO, what was your career?

“I worked in the staffing industry, but that didn’t seem to matter when I talked to men in business about launching Sky High PEO. When I officially opened, several men told me that there was no way it would ever succeed. They would hang up. Some even slammed the phone down, not allowing me to elaborate, but I pushed through and did what a lot of people couldn’t or wanted due to the stigma of Cannabis. I believe my strength came from growing up in foster care, surviving on my own, and believing in my wants and visions instead of what society tried to force on me.”

You all offer PEO services to cannabis businesses. Why do cannabis businesses need these services?

“Making it possible for employees to have: Health Care, Dental, Vision, COVID pay, 401K/ Retirement Programs, and Life Insurance is very important. If an employer can care for their employee, it shows compassion. Giving a person the ability to plan for the future with a retirement plan is the most selfless thing an employer can do. At the time the employee is working for an employer, they are caring for the business and/or product. Giving employees benefits and the ability to look forward to retirement shows you want the best for them. Caring for an employee leads to the employee caring for the business!”

What’s the most important thing for cannabis businesses to know about PEOs?

“The amount of money a company can save by partnering with a PEO is worth exploring. For example, workers’ compensation/benefits pricing is about three times lower than if a company were to purchase on its own. The PEO takes the liability away from the owner, and with the PEO handling all areas of Human Resources, the owner of the company can concentrate on growing their business instead of the day-to-day Human Resources tasks/functions.

SKY HIGH PEO fights for the company and against workers’ compensation fraud. We will investigate and report any fraudulent claims. The truth is business owners need to concentrate on the business and allow a PEO to manage the people aspect. A PEO that will fight for them.”

Please tell me about Sky High PEO being an “A” rated workers’ compensation carrier.

“An A-rated insurance company is one that the credit agencies judge to be on strong financial footing. An A-rated insurance company is more likely to honor the terms of your policy than a company with a lower grade.”

Is there any state in the United States that Sky High PEO doesn’t service?

“Sky High PEO has the ability to do business in any legalized medical or adult-use Cannabis state.”

In Closing

I asked Veronica to close out our interview with a piece of advice for employers that want to retain their top talent. Veronica responded: “Partner with Sky High PEO.”
