New Release from KOS: Dark Forrest

Hey now! A very cool new release over at Kingdom Organic Seeds is called Dark Forrest. The first thing I think you should know about this hybrid is that she flowers a bit longer than your average cannabis plant. About 12 weeks total flowering time. While this may not seem like any big deal, if you grow indoors and your experience lies with 8-to-10-week flowering plants, it might be a bigger deal than you think.

The Dark Forrest is a full spectrum daywrecker to be sure—by daywrecker, I more accurately mean day changer and change it will. When done correctly, this one will deliver a sublime delight, body, and soul, as it were, heh heh. A lot of body, and a lot of head, and peeps that are prone to get paranoid on some cannabis varieties should tread carefully here. This is definitely one of those intense types; think along the lines of real deal White Widow here.

The Rundown—Hierarchy Etc.

Male Breeder(s) Deets: 3 superior males of Deep Chunk were the paternal P1s in this cross. I chose three very aggressive males that were very hearty with large floral formations, and all had excellent resin potential properties regarding both terpenes and raw resin production. One large purple male, one medium green male, and a crazy vigorous huge green male were all used.

Paternal Dark Forrest Breeder

Female Breeder Deets: 1 selected beautiful Black Forrest individual female (see below) as the maternal P1 in this cross.  This female leans so heavily towards the Vietnam Black that she is almost indistinguishable from the original Vietnamese line. Her flowering time was every bit of 16 weeks. Huge resin production with very gooey, large, and dense flowers. Almost psychoactive potency, crazy intense.

BLACK FORREST (maternal P1) Quick Info

Back Forrest at 9 weeks Indoors
Back Forrest at 9 weeks Indoors

The Black Forrest hybrid is an F1 cross between a Vietnam Black (landrace female) and a Cherry Bomb (F3 male). The Cherry Bomb was out of Hawaii and was a cross between 3 killer Hawaiian sativa dominant strains and a Cherry AK47. I made this original Black Forrest cross about two decades ago. Look for KOS’ release of Black Forrest F2s in the very near future.

Dark Forrest Growing Information

She’s a beast—full stop! She will prefer higher temperatures, and she will need a lot of water. Her stretch should be managed by the Deep Chunk, but she’ll still have the capability to get huge if she’s totally happy. You will want to use slightly larger containers to flower her in to make sure she makes it all good through her last two weeks of flowering. The last two weeks of flowering are where everything can go to hell, leaving you with good cannabis rather than epic cannabis.

Watch your pH from getting too low, and speaking generally, the Dark Forrest won’t like global pH changes to her container soil, so you want to use any liquid nutrients very sparingly, if at all. Just use a lighter touch, generally speaking. She will be crazy adaptable, tough, hearty, and resistant to most things, except severe cold, or sudden (global) lower pH ranges.

If you pull this one off, you will never forget it. This is the kind of weeds that you remember forever. She will clone easily, and she isn’t especially sensitive to light poisoning. As long as you fix the light issue, she will go back to normal in about two weeks. Just an outstanding array of intense cannabis genetics here.

Afterword

I hope you dug on today’s article about the Dark Forrest release. Another new release to hit the streets lately, also over at KOS is called Poison Chunk. And Deep Chunk is also back in stock. Check out another killer I personally love-love-love, the Chunky Cherry Thai. Grab a copy of my TLO 2nd Edition book regarding all-natural container growing and soil recycling. L8r G8rs…

For first time in U.S. History more Americans use cannabis than tobacco

The history of tobacco use stretches back over 1,000 years. First discovered by the indigenous populations of Mesoamerica and South America, by the time settlers came to America, tobacco had been used for centuries. But tobacco’s heyday looks to be fading finally.

A Gallup poll released on August 16th indicates that a historic shift has occurred, with more Americans using cannabis than tobacco products. The polling indicates that 16% of adults currently smoke cannabis, while only 11% use tobacco.

Nearly half, 48%, of those polled admit to trying weed at some point in their lives. That, too, is a record. And just last year, only 12% of those who responded indicated that they used cannabis.

30% of those between 18 and 38 said they smoke weed, while 22% admitted using edibles. Just 16% of older Americans, those 35 to 54 years old, said they use the herb and those 55 or older who said they imbibe it amounted to only 7%.

Back in the 1950s, 45% of Americans were tobacco smokers. If you watch any movie from much of the 20th century, you will see cigarettes blazing in the hands of anyone who was presented as virile or sexy.

To quote a certain folk singer from that century, the times they are a changin.’

However, cannabis legalization activists are looking at the number of those who believe that the herb should be federally legal. That number is also historical, at 68%, more than two in three Americans. Unfortunately, our government is way behind the curve.

83% of Democrats support legalization, while only half of Republicans think cannabis should be legal, with 71% of independents supporting complete reforms. Someone needs to pass the doobie to those deniers in the GOP. They are really out of step with the rest of us; Regardless of gender, age, education, or income, most Americans now seek full legalization.

Look out, Joe Camel, you aren’t cool anymore. Time to trade that pack of cancer sticks for some of that sticky green bud and put some hemp in that hump.

Ontarios Cannabis Industry Model Needs A Revamp

On August 5th, a third-party distribution center in Ontario, Canada, named Domain Logistics, was subjected to a cyber attack that essentially crippled the company’s ability to deliver cannabis products to licensed retailers. Domain Logistics contracts with the provincial government in Ontario, where all licensed outlets are required to purchase their cannabis from the government (Ontario Cannabis Store).

Had the cyber attack occurred in most other legal cannabis markets, it would have largely been an isolated incident, and the fallout from the attack would have only affected a small percentage of cannabis businesses. However, since every retailer must go through the Ontario Cannabis Store, and by extension, its vendors, the fallout from the cyber attack on August 5th spread across the province.

A Broken Monopoly Model

It is estimated that Ontario is home to roughly 1,333 licensed retailers. Some of the licensed outlets are part of large store chains, while others are small, family-owned operations consisting of only one store. Of course, there are also cannabis companies that fall somewhere in between.

Regardless of their size, as previously mentioned in this article, every single licensed retail outlet has to go through the Ontario Cannabis Store since it has a monopoly on supplying inventory. Monopoly models rarely work, especially when the entity having the monopoly is the government and the product is cannabis which has to compete with an unregulated market.

In a monopoly cannabis model, it only takes one hiccup anywhere in the supply chain to largely bring the regulated cannabis industry in that market to a grinding halt. That is on full display in Ontario, where licensed retailers received no cannabis product deliveries for roughly a week. Even with deliveries finally resuming, many retailers are still experiencing bare shelves.

The Need For Further Reform

The main lesson from this latest cyber attack in Ontario is that there need to be further reforms to help ensure that the regulated industry can effectively compete with the unregulated industry. The current model will always be vulnerable to all types of issues, not just cyber attacks. It only takes one major issue to cause enormous damage to the regulated industry.

How many consumers and patients sought out unregulated sources for cannabis due to the halt in deliveries in Ontario? We may never know the actual number; however, it’s a safe bet that it was a considerable percentage of people that would have otherwise made their purchases from regulated sources, and that is unacceptable.

Regulated outlets have a hard enough time competing with the unregulated market being that the unregulated market requires considerably less overhead to operate. After licensing fees, facility rental fees, security costs, and everything else that goes into running a legal cannabis business, regulated outlets are already at a distinct disadvantage compared to unregulated sources. Ontario keeping its current model, and the hiccups and issues that come with it all but ensure that the unregulated market in Ontario will continue to thrive, and that’s unfortunate considering that things don’t have to be that way.

Home Cultivation is Sprouting Up All Over America Says New Report

Millions of Americans live in a new age of cannabis where they can amble down to a brick-and-mortar retail weed shop and peruse aisles of packaged cannabis products. From flower to oil, and from vape cartridges to pre-rolled joints, in legal states, there is a cornucopia of ganja for imbibers of the fiber to enjoy.

It is so easy to purchase weed in some states that one might wonder why anyone would want to go through all the trouble and expense to grow it at home. Au contraire says a new report from New Frontier Data (NFD). The company surveyed nearly 5,000 consumers of cannabis and 1,250 non-users, finding that home cultivation of weed is alive and growing.

It is estimated that home cannabis gardeners will produce a staggering 11 million pounds of the sticky icky in 2022.

According to the report, in Colorado, over 800,000 lbs. of weed was produced in 2020 via the legal adult-use market, generating over $2 billion in sales. Combine that with the cannabis produced by home gardeners, and you have enough weed to get multiple Lollapaloozas baked into the stratosphere with nugs left over for the parking lot.

The report said that only one in three home growers keep all their bounty just for themselves, and half, 49%, share their harvests with friends or family. Most of these garage ganja gardeners maintain around six plants at a time and reap about three annual harvests.

Registered medical cannabis patients are even more likely to have experimented with home cultivation, and they are more prone to keep their entire harvest for themselves. That is understandable since that weed is precious medicine to them. And they tend to grow more. 47% of the medical growers report keeping seven or more plants at any time.

Retail cannabis stores are less likely to stock the specific strains that are reported to benefit various health conditions, and patients are more apt to want to guarantee that their ganja is pure and free from pesticides and heavy metals. And there is a certain thrill that comes from burning one’s home reefer after babying those green goddesses throughout the seasons.

The report says that around 6% of cannabis enthusiasts produce their weed at home, which amounts to about 3 million home growers.

As soon as 2030, it is estimated that 4.1 million American danksters will home-produce their cannabis, around 7% of cannabis consumers. The number of patients is a bit lower at 5%. And you can bet that many of those 420 farmers will be busting out some heaping helpings of home fries to compliment all that homegrown because, as any experienced medical cannabis patient can tell you, munchies save lives.

In states where cannabis is not yet legal, you can bet community activists are working hard lobbying and on citizen initiatives because every American deserves the opportunity to choose where they access their weed. Everyone should be able to obtain it legally.

And we should remain very thankful for those who are operating state-legal adult-use retail cannabis outlets and grow ops because they are economic activists taking things to the next level where community legalization reformers left off. Retail weed sellers are legitimizing and normalizing cannabis and are doing so at great risk as federal laws are still stuck behind the iron curtain of prohibition.

There is room for both home cultivation and a thriving retail weed market. Home brewing has not harmed the retail alcohol market at all; in fact, it has enhanced it.

Regardless of how and where cannabis is grown, it should be safe and pure and grown organically. That is the Irie way for things to be.

People planning to put those ballasts up in the basement or till the silty soil in their backyard in an attempt to produce their own stanky dank would be wise to study the pages of SKUNK Magazine, which is dedicated to regenerative organic cultivation. Right here, you can learn how to produce the best buds, whether you are in the cannabis closet or outstanding in your field.

Because, at the end of the day, when it is all said and done…that’s just how we roll.

Leading Public Health Expert Calls for Slovenia to Embrace Cannabis Reform

Slovenia is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Located in central Europe, Slovenia is bordered by Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, and to the southwest by Italy. With so much going on in Europe on the cannabis industry and policy fronts, Slovenia may not be the first place that comes to mind when it comes to the emerging cannabis industry. However, the nation is home to a growing cannabis community, and reform efforts there recently received a huge boost from a leading public health expert.

Cf. DuÅ¡an Nolimal, Ph.D., recently published an extensive op-ed via one of Slovenia’s largest media outlets, Delo, in which he called on lawmakers to pass a number of cannabis reform measures. Dr. Nolimal also urged lawmakers to take meaningful steps to create a policy and regulatory framework in Slovenia that is conducive to helping the nation become an international cannabis hub. It’s a very thoughtful and thorough op-ed that everyone should read. For more information regarding Dr. Nolimal, I suggest that you check out his bio at this link here.

The Economic Benefits Of Legalization

Slovenia is home to roughly two million people, with the major industries in the country being pharmaceuticals, automotive parts, electrical appliances, and food processing. The nation’s GDP ranks 29th in Europe and 82nd globally. Slovenia, like all countries, would greatly benefit from embracing the emerging cannabis industry and the economic boost that it creates, including boosts to local economies, job creation, and tax revenue generation. That is in addition to the government savings that would instantly be achieved by Slovenia no longer enforcing failed cannabis prohibition policies.

A large sector of Slovenia’s economy is based on food. According to World Atlas, “About 704 companies were registered in the sector in 2015 employing about 12,658 people. The income generated from the sector amounted to $2.27 billion. The sector is among the third largest employers in processing activities alongside the production of electrical appliances and metalworking.”

Slovenia’s chemical and pharmaceutical sector employs roughly 26,000 people, with 72% of the sector’s sales coming from the export market. The food sector and the pharmaceutical sector may not seem like a logical combination to non-cannabis observers; however, people involved in the emerging cannabis industry will be quick to recognize the enormous demand for medical-grade cannabis edibles and that the demand is only going to increase for the foreseeable future.

According to global data company Technavio, the global cannabis-infused edible product market is anticipated to grow by USD 25.27 billion from 2020 to 2025. The sector will increase in size by roughly 21.74% annually. Slovenia is well-positioned to gain a sizable share of that specific sector, and it’s just one of the many examples of how a legalized and embraced cannabis industry in Slovenia can help bring jobs and economic benefits to the country. Other examples include, but are certainly not limited to: cannabis research, industry intellectual property development, ancillary industry equipment manufacturing, and raw material processing.

The Opportunity Costs Of Delaying

A major point that is highlighted in Dr. Nolimal’s op-ed is that time is not frozen while lawmakers in Slovenia drag their feet on reforming the nation’s cannabis laws. Countries across Europe are reforming their laws, creating regulations, and ramping up their cannabis industry efforts, not the least of which is Germany. And all the while, people are consuming cannabis for medical and adult use in Slovenia every day, albeit not legally.

The longer that Slovenia waits, the farther behind it will be compared to other countries that embraced cannabis reform and the emerging cannabis industry earlier. It may also result in Slovenia having less input on what its future cannabis laws and public health strategies contain, as pointed out by Dr. Nolimal in his op-ed.

“If the Ministry of Health delays until cannabis is approved by other European countries, foreign commercial entities will be able to have a very significant influence on the determination of national legislation regarding cannabis in our country.” Dr. Nolimal stated in his op-ed piece.

“This could be a major problem, as the commercial interest in cannabis may be diametrically opposed to the interests of the public health profession, which should already be advocating a zero-tolerance policy for young and vulnerable groups and moderate use and risk reduction for adults,” Dr. Nolimal went on to state.

Cannabis reform is spreading across Europe, and once Germany launches its legalized adult-use industry, it will undoubtedly result in a tidal wave of reform within the European continent and elsewhere on the planet. It would be very wise for Slovenia’s lawmakers to heed Dr. Nolimal’s advice and reform the nation’s cannabis laws as soon as possible, and build a regulated cannabis industry that harnesses the skills, talent, and resources that are already in Slovenia and with it, create once-in-a-lifetime economic opportunities for Slovenia’s citizens.

Are CBD Product Labels Accurate?

According to multiple studies, labels on CBD products may be less accurate than you think. Recent research from Johns Hopkins identified multiple label discrepancies in many different CBD topical products. [1]

The labeling accuracy of over 100 different CBD topicals was tested. The results of the study were recently published in JAMA Network Open, and they raise several questions. Are the labels on CBD products accurate? If they aren’t, can we trust CBD product labels?

Research on CBD Topical Label Accuracy

To get a good range of product samples, CBD products for the study were purchased in brick-and-mortar retail stores and online. Product types included CBD patches, creams, lotions, balms, and salves.

Study Highlights

  • Only 24% of products were labeled accurately
  • 58% had more CBD than labeled
  • 18% had less CBD than labeled
  • 22% of in-store products contained tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
  • 45% of online products contained THC

Having only 24% of the CBD topical product labels test out as accurate suggests only one in every four CBD topical product labels is accurate. The presence of THC raises another concern for people who may be sensitive to THC, or those who avoid it for other reasons. Seeing as 45% of the online products contained THC, it may be best to avoid buying CBD online if you’re worried about consuming THC.

Research on CBD Extract Label Accuracy

These new findings fall in line with an older study examining the labeling accuracy of CBD extracts sold online. 84 CBD extract products were purchased online. Product types included CBD vape carts, CBD oils, and CBD tinctures. [2]

Study Highlights

  • Only 31% of products were labeled accurately
  • 26% had less CBD than labeled
  • 42% had more CBD than labeled
  • 21% of products contained THC

These results were published in 2017, and it seems not much has changed between then and now.

Both studies have show thsat CBD products are not always labeled accurately. Nevertheless reputable companies are more likely to have accurate labels and trustful certificate of analysis (CoA).

For product manufacturers, it stresses the importance of finding an accurate testing lab. Testing labs especially should use this information to make improvements to cannabinoid testing techniques to improve accuracy ratings. Although in the end, it is difficult to determine if these label inaccuracies are a result of lab testing errors or mistakes at the label printing stage. Either way, care should be given at all stages of the CBD product manufacturing process, from creation to consumer.

Recapping A Historic International Cannabis Business Conference In Berlin

Whether you are a passionate cannabis enthusiast or just a passive cannabis industry observer, you are surely well aware of the fact that Germany is trending towards implementing adult-use cannabis legalization and, with it, a regulated adult-use industry. Germany may not be the first nation to pursue such a nationwide public policy and industry evolution; however, it is the most significant effort of its kind to date.

Germany is home to the fourth-largest economy on planet earth, with only the economies of the United States, China, and Japan ranking higher (as measured by GDP). Cannabis may be legal at the state level in some parts of the U.S., yet federal legalization still remains out of sight, and nationwide cannabis sales are even further out of reach. China and Japan have no current plans to legalize cannabis. For that matter, the rest of the countries on the list of ‘top ten economies on earth’ will maintain prohibition for the foreseeable future with the exception of Canada.
Canada is currently the only G-7 nation that allows regulated adult-use sales and has served as the top ‘legal cannabis economy’ on the planet since launching nationwide adult-use sales in late 2018. Once Germany launches nationwide cannabis sales, which could come as early as 2023, it will instantly take over the title of being home to the largest cannabis market in the world.
Germany’s economy is over twice the size of Canada’s economy, and the same is true when comparing the two nations’ populations. Canada only shares a physical border with one country, the United States, and many border states now have their own adult-use industries. Germany, on the other hand, shares physical borders with nine countries – the most in Europe. Barring any unforeseen policy changes, Germany will be an adult-use sales oasis in the region to a large extent, with Germany and the surrounding countries’ populations adding up to roughly a quarter billion people. The significance of legalization in Germany cannot be overstated.

Given the context of what is going on in Germany right now, Berlin served as an amazing backdrop to the International Cannabis Business Conference, which took place on July 19-20th at the Hotel Estrel. It was the fifth installment of the B2B conference in Berlin, the largest of its type in Europe, and with so much excitement about what is going on right now in Germany, it proved to be an experience of a lifetime.

The attention of virtually every member of the emerging global cannabis industry has been squarely on Germany this year, and it was very evident throughout the conference that the excitement level was off the charts, with so many people finally meeting in person to discuss everything. You could really sense that everyone was eager to get back to attending events in person, to learn more about what is going on in Germany and Europe, and to share what is going on in their own respective jurisdictions.

A major theme of this year’s historic conference involved cohorts representing over 85 countries traveling to the event, creating almost a ‘United Nations of cannabis’ environment. One thing that we have always strived to do at the International Cannabis Business Conference is to connect people from all over the globe, and it was exciting to see that on full display at this year’s Berlin conference on such a grand scale.

Germany, for obvious reasons, is a very exciting place for cannabis, and what is going on there will have a butterfly effect on the rest of the world. However, there is plenty of other significant things happening elsewhere on the planet, and that was evident in much of the networking that occurred throughout the two-day B2B conference. Entrepreneurs, policymakers, investors, and industry service providers from nearly every corner of the world were comparing notes, striking deals, and discussing plans for the future.

It was very inspiring to see each and every time, and it was truly symbolic of the current state of the cannabis industry. The cannabis industry is going global. Historically, legal cannabis markets were entirely confined by national borders. Exports and imports have slowly ramped up in some nations over time, but make no mistake – the future of the cannabis industry will largely play out on the world stage, and the cannabis plant is going to go mainstream at a global level in the coming years, which was talked about over and over at the Berlin conference by participants in discussions that often included representatives from multiple continents.

The most historic moment of the conference, and arguably the most historic moment of any cannabis conference to date, came via the day one keynote address provided by Mr. Burkhard Blienert. Mr. Blienert currently serves as Germany’s top drug policy official and is overseeing the nation’s adult-use cannabis legalization and industry implementation process. It is the first time in history that a currently-serving official at that level has ever spoken at a cannabis conference, and right in the middle of the public policy reform process, no less. Hearing from Mr. Blienert amid everything that is going on in Germany and Europe was truly special and an experience that attendees will no doubt cherish for years to come.

The two-day conference was packed with other world-class speakers and panels, videos of which can be found on the International Cannabis Business Conference YouTube channel. Topics for panels and presenters included, but are not limited to:

  • Ongoing activism and advocacy
  • Medical cannabis policy
  • Cannabis policy in Germany
  • Shifting cannabis policies in Europe
  • Evolving industry standards and regulations
  • Emerging markets
  • Supply chain and logistics
  • Legalization models
  • Cultivation
  • Sustainability
  • Consumer trends
  • Investing opportunities

If you have been involved in cannabis for any significant duration of time, then you know firsthand that there are certain times and places when you realize that you are in the midst of history being made. For people in attendance at the International Cannabis Business Conference B2B event in Berlin this summer, it was absolutely one of those times. The networking and learning opportunities were unmatched, and never before has such a wide array of cannabis industry representatives from so many different countries come together under one roof at the same time.
As always, it isn’t an International Cannabis Business Conference event without an amazing after-party, and this year’s after-party was particularly epic. Multi-Grammy awarding-winning reggae band Morgan Heritage kicked off their European tour at this year’s after-party event in Berlin. They were joined on stage by reggae pioneer Rocker-T, and collectively they rocked the house. The concert in such an intimate setting was the perfect way to unwind and celebrate after networking and learning. International Cannabis Business Conference founder Alex Rogers also rocked the mic on stage with the crew for a time, proving once again that the International Cannabis Business Conference works hard and plays hard.

The International Cannabis Business Conference team is already working hard on the next conference in Berlin which is currently slated to take place June 29-30, 2023. It’s quite possible that it could be the first conference in the new adult-use legalization era in Germany, which is an extremely exciting thought. With so much going on in the emerging global cannabis industry right now, particularly in Europe, the 2023 conference in Berlin is a must-attend. We look forward to seeing you there!

22Red. Exceptionally Well Cured Indoor Grown Craft Cannabis Tasting Notes

Let’s talk about 22Red. I haven’t been so enthusiastic about high THC cannabis in a while, so let me bring some flavors and aromatics into your mind.
The hybrid version, boasting THC levels of 28%, immediately captures my imagination. Way off in the distance, I sense a wood-boring insect, perpetually drilling into my cerebral cortex. It’s not unpleasant, quite the opposite. It’s a very pleasurable sensation. I crave the point that the awareness touches inside my intellect. It’s profound and exciting all at the same time.

Coming into view, a similar sensation, but this time the location of the pleasure is in the writing portion of my brain. I’m excited to report that the Jellymintz strain is perfect for intellectual pursuits. I’m peacefully relaxed and happy to get to work. I want to go scrub the bathtub or do laundry. This strain is very proactive and fun!

It’s gorgeous looking in the small glass jar containing just over 3.5 grams of Los Angeles-grown, indoor (gourmet) cannabis flower. Dark purple in overall color, there are snippets of orange and fluorescent green in the tangle of dark to light.

The aromatics are spicy with a touch of European petrol, crushed salt crystals, and snipped fall herbs.

Bringing up the rear of the aromatics comes a touch of Thai chilies, a slight burn but not overwhelming. Fun stuff to twist up into a joint, not that I can do that. But a man may dream!

Jellymintz Tasting Notes

Nose

Brightly aromatic with droplets of diesel fuel and tarragon. After crushing in my Gemini grinder, I’m taken by the unmistakable aroma of old-time: Choward’s Violet Chewing Gum… and crushed salt-slicked stones. Shooting directly up my nose. Spicy and enthusiastic! I’m getting it!

Palate
Soft and earthy with touches of cream soda and roasted celery root slaw. This is perfectly cured cannabis with a serious kick. It gets me really high just imagining the experience as it unfolds.

Stone
I’m massively grooving on only a couple of small hits from my Session borosilicate- one hit mini-joint. I must preface….. This is not cannabis for the inexperienced or the meek. It’s not as overwhelming as some of the “concentrate or hash infused” herbs that I’ve smoked recently, but this flower is not infused. It’s gorgeous flower, expertly grown, with love. It oozes the passion of the grower…….. (And especially the person who does the curing, bravo!) I’ve always said that curing cannabis is a true art form. To look towards those tobacco curing sheds down South. Airflow, aromatics, history, perfection… I’m just old-fashioned, but the curing is my passion. “Almost anyone can grow cannabis,” said a mentor of mine. “Curing it is the true art form…”

Experience

I feel excited and interested in discussing the satisfaction of smoking some 22Red Jellymintz with the anticipation that you try some and experience the exhilaration that I enjoyed.
Good stuff!

22Red cont.

I’m a massive fan of strains that remind me of the Sours that I grew up around the New York area. Sour this and Sour that. NY Sour Diesel was the one that captured my memories the most. Every time that I smell it, I’m plunged back to the early 1990s all over again.

I was fortunate to grow up in the near proximity of New York City and Massachusetts, where great weed could be found with just a telephone number…So the acquisition of ultra-high quality artisanal cannabis was never difficult for me, nor too far to get the good good.

I worked for many years in the television engineering business, and let me tell you, superb weed was everywhere in the field of sound. Recording engineers had a “higher” sensibility about them. Cannabis as good as 22Red was always available to the intellect, which meant someone in the recording industry. I’m glad there is more of this around my world in California. It makes traveling much more pleasurable.

At the time, great weed was a certainty in NYC along with a very welcome clientele from young, intellectual “stoners” like me. 22Red So Delicious reminds me of that era in each puff. It’s truly a history lesson for the intellectually driven cannabis imbiber like myself. Each draw brings a pleasant sour apple flavor, melting into caramelized orange zest and dense, sour cherries on the finish. The cure must be as pertinent as the smoke itself, with pools of shimmering molten sugar leading into balsamic vinegar and funky rum notes. I love the So Delicious for more reasons, such as snipped fennel, icy cold buttermilk, candy corn, and licorice candy. This is sophisticated cannabis for the appreciative, gourmet aficionado.

Nose

Bitter Chocolate on the nose, delving into dribbles of Chartreuse VEP (the old stuff) and shovelfuls of loam. There are other scents and flavors coming into view such as tomato skin, cinnamon shavings, and lead pencil. Marvelous…

Palate
Well cured with no coughing in evidence. This is the benchmark of indoor-grown cannabis with a twist. That is a really lively experience that transcends the usual into a deeply evocative journey. To the place not known, yet never forgotten.

Stone

Can’t you tell? IT TAKES ME THERE… wow.. finally.

Experience

I’m experienced.. have you been experienced? It’s pretty clear what time it is.

CBD Dosages Guide

According to recent survey results, 64% of US adults are familiar with cannabidiol (CBD), and one-third of Americans have used it during their lifetime. Nowadays, consumers have a variety of CBD products from which they can choose. Although, legal CBD products are only allowed to contain less than 0.3% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Despite this, CBD is becoming increasingly popular because of its many health benefits. After all, determining a safe and effective dosage is important, especially for those consuming CBD for health reasons and not recreation.

More people are beginning to wonder what the right CBD dosages are for them.

What CBD Dosages Are Safe?

Data on CBD use in humans remains fairly limited, especially regarding the effects of consuming pure CBD. Most researchers have determined that CBD has relatively low toxicity, but serious risks are still involved with people taking too high dosages of CBD. [1]

Yet, since caution is still recommended because of sparsely available information, many health practitioners recommend a person start with a small dose. Once they get used to the small dosage, they can increase it in five-milligram increments until a minimal effective dosage is determined for symptom relief.

There are, of course, maximum limits of recommended dosages depending on the condition and several factors surrounding the person consuming the CBD, like their age and weight.

However, according to a survey conducted by a group of researchers over a 28-day trial, 1,500 mg per day of CBD is found to cause no harm to humans in addition to not causing any signs of withdrawal. [2]

What Are The CBD Dosages For Different Conditions?

Firstly, it should be noted that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t regulate the use of CBD except for a prescription drug that’s used to treat epilepsy. It’s also highly illegal for an individual or company to market CBD as a supplement or add it to food sold commercially.

However, there are some dosages that researchers have used that have been widely deemed safe because of their therapeutic effect on different medical conditions.

  • Psychosis – 1200 mg daily for four weeks. (oral)
  • Schizophrenia – 40 mg to 1,280 mg per day for four weeks. (oral)
  • Parkinson’s disease – 75 mg to 300 mg (oral) [3]
  • Anxiety – 300 mg to 600 mg (oral) [4]
  • Huntington’s disease – Up to 12 sprays (nasal) [5]
  • Bowel disease – 5 mg twice daily. (drops) [6]
  • Pain caused by cancer – 50 mg to 600 mg daily (oral) [7]
  • Type two diabetes – 100 mg twice daily. (oral) [8]

Since CBD remains an active field of research, it’s usually best to consult a doctor for the correct dosage for your condition.

Save Mart Now Offering CBD Products in 100 Plus Locations

Save Mart, a leading American full-service grocery store, has extended its cannabidiol (CBD) offerings from 5 to over one hundred locations. The move, as reported by the company’s management team, was informed by a strong retail sales performance of the CBD line provided by cbdMD.

Save Mart, which was started in 1952, operates 204 supermarkets across California and Northern Nevada. The company operates under four different brands: Save Mart, S- Mart Foods, Lucky, and Food Maxx.

Towards the end of 2019, Save Mart kicked off a partnership with a leading CBD company, cbdMD that led to the introduction of CBD products at their Modesto location. By the close of that year, Save Mart was selling CBD products at five of its locations. The company has now given a go-ahead for more of its locations to start offering CBD products. This is exciting for the market since both brands (Save Mart and cbdMD) have a huge consumer following in both California and Nevada.

Early this year, Save Mart was bought by a Los Angeles-based private equity firm: Kingswood Capital Management LP. The company was previously family-owned. With the new acquisition, Kingswood hopes to extend the company’s footprint across Northern America.  Save Mart previously operated 89 pharmacies but this service was moved to Walgreens soon after the Kingswood acquisition.

Hemp was legalized federally in the US by the passage of the Agricultural Act of 2018. This made hemp-derived CBD products legal across the US. Consumers turn to CBD products to get relief from fatigue, stress, anxiety, sleep issues, and chronic pain among other reasons.  While there’s a multitude of CBD products being sold both online and at storefronts in California, not all are from reputable sources.

About Save Mart

Save Mart is a group of four companies that operate full-service grocery stores in California and parts of Nevada. The company which began in 1952 as a local grocery store in central California was recently acquired by Kingswood Capital Management which plans on increasing the company’s footprint to cover most of North America. Save Mart Companies operate under the banners of Lucky, Save Mart, FoodMaxx, and S-Mart Foods.

About cbdMD

cbdMD offers 29 varieties of full-spectrum CBD products that are hemp-derived and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-free. Their product range includes tinctures, capsules, topicals, bath bombs, and Paw CBD pet products. The products are manufactured in GMP-certified labs and undergo rigorous third-party testing to confirm purity and potency. Their products are particularly popular among the athletic community but are also enjoyed by a wide variety of CBD consumers.

CBD Skin Cream and Sublingual Strips

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s one of the major active compounds found in the cannabis plant. CBD is not psychotropic like tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. CBD is psychoactive and can make you feel more relaxed, feel less pain, and feel more comfortable. The legality of CBD products will vary from state to state and can depend on if the CBD comes from the cannabis plant or the hemp plant. It is always recommended to buy CBD products from reliable companies and to check the certificate of analysis in order to be sure about the actual cannabinoid content.

CBD Skin Cream

Even if more research is necessary before the medical benefits of CBD products (including skin creams) can be broadly claimed, evidence suggests about the positive impact that these products may induce to treat various health issues.

One of the properties of CBD is that it is anti-inflammatory, meaning it reduces inflammation. It is because of this property that CBD skin cream might be able to help with acne, psoriasis or eczema. [1] It can also help with other medical issues such as arthritis and peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage outside of the brain or spine).

CBD Sublingual Strips

CBD strips are small and discreet. You place them in your mouth under the thongue and they dissolve quickly. By dissolving in your mouth, the strips are able to use your sublingual artery to get the CBD into your bloodstream quickly so you can feel its effects faster. These strips can serve a variety of purposes from making your breath smell nice, to helping you sleep, or even giving you an energy boost.

There is a new anxiety generation. Can CBD help them?

Anxiety is the most prevalent psychiatric condition in the developed world, with estimates showing that between 30% to 40% of people will meet criteria for at least one anxiety disorder during their lifetime. [1]  Truthfully, everyone experiences anxiety, but it also tends to affect adolescents and young adults at the highest rates [2], and to naturally decrease as we enter older age. Over the past 15 years, the American Psychological Association (APA) has conducted the “Stress in America” survey, and results show clearly that Millenials and Gen Z adults score higher than other generations on all measures of stress. [3]

There are a number of strong, established treatments for anxiety and stress. Psychotherapy is among the most effective treatments. Psychotherapy for anxiety can include a number of options, including cognitive-behavior therapy, supportive therapy, and more interpersonal or psychodynamic approaches. Some of the pros of therapy is that patients don’t have to worry about side effects and can learn skills that last a lifetime. Some of the negatives are that it takes time to work and can be far more expensive than medications.

Medications also exist for treating anxiety. The most often-used medications include antidepressants (which also work for anxiety) and some of the newer anti-anxiety medications like buspirone. Anxiolytics are a strong class of medicines for anxiety, and include drugs like Xanax and Valium. However, these should not be used often as they actually make anxiety worse with regular or long term use. All medications also come with several possible side effects, some of which can be severe.

CBD may be another option for managing anxiety and stress, especially if symptoms are not severe enough to warrant more established treatments. Although CBD has still not been well studied in large trials, anecdotal reports and some indirect studies suggest it can help. Neuroimaging studies have shown that CBD has similar, beneficial effects on brain functioning as other drugs used to treat mental health conditions. [4]  Some preliminary  studies have also suggested taking CBD just before doing something that would normally cause anxiety decreasing stress in social anxiety disorder. [6] More studies are needed to see if repeated dosing can help against anxiety, but so far studies are quite promising. Among possible side effects CBD can cause liver issues at high dosages. More studies ar needed to fully highlight the possible undesired effects of this valuable compound.

CBD can be a good alternative to other anxiety and stress treatments, and given just how much anxiety persists in our generation, it is important we consider new options for helping people.

CBD Skincare Products: A Booming Market

Cannabidiol (CBD) products are changing all kinds of markets. From agricultural to pharmaceuticals and therapeutic treatments, CBD is everywhere. The latest trend is to add CBD to skincare products, and according to a Data Bridge Market Research report, this may be one of the largest growth markets within the cannabis sector.[1]

Benefits of CBD in Skincare Products

CBD is one of the major components of the cannabis plant. Without any psychotropic effects, it is possible to reap all the therapeutic rewards of this valuable compound without any mind-altering consequences. While CBD research continues today, there are many promising effects in skin care that may set CBD products apart. CBD is especially useful in treating dehydrated skin or even more severe conditions like eczema or psoriasis. CBD is also beneficial in treating inflammatory acne.[2]

The Current CBD Skincare Market

In 2021, the global CBD skincare market held a value of $952.91 million.[3] Many of the companies who hold market share in this industry reside in Canada, as their cannabis laws are more forgiving than the United States.[4] As laws in the United States move towards more cannabis and CBD acceptance, there is a large chance that the market will continue to open further.[5] Because of this, Data Bridge anticipates that the market will grow to be valued $7.58 billion by 2029, resulting in a compounded annual growth rate of 29.6%.

Factors Driving Market Growth

Several factors could drive market growth of CBD skincare products such as growth in CBD awareness, particularly in relation to its benefits, increased technology, and increased research and development stimulating the market. Of course, there are also challenges to overcome for this growth to succeed. The two primary concerns hampering markets are price fluctuations in the raw material and production, as well as regulatory concerns. It is impossible to predict with complete accuracy how the market will develop, but industry insiders hold more hope than despair at the growth potential of CBD skincare products.

Can Full-Spectrum CBD Get You High?

One of the most common concerns among first-time cannabidiol (CBD) users is getting high. For someone seeking out CBD for the first time, the idea probably feels like using hemp’s more intoxicating sibling.

Terms like full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate don’t help matters, especially when you hear that full-spectrum CBD contains THC. It’s easy for misinformation and myths to take root.

What is Full-Spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum CBD is CBD that contains the entire range of cannabinoids from the original hemp plant in addition to other cannabis constituents like terpenes and flavonoids. When you choose full-spectrum CBD, you’re getting as close to the plant as possible.

This has a number of benefits. First, it’s the most natural and least processed form of CBD. In fact, dried CBD flower would fall under the full-spectrum category. Full-spectrum CBD benefits from the combination of all cannabis constituents called “entourage effect”.

That all said, full-spectrum CBD does contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). On a federal level, CBD cannot legally contain more than 0.3% THC. That amount of THC isn’t enough to produce intoxicating effects, but the presence of this psychotropic substance may deter some people.

Full-Spectrum and Broad-Spectrum CBD

They both contain a range of the original cannabinoids from the hemp plant, including minor cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. The major difference though is that broad-spectrum CBD has no THC. Broad-spectrum CBD has undergone one more step of refinement called THC remediation, and its purpose is to either pull out any THC in the extract or convert it into other cannabinoids. Broad-spectrum CBD can be a great option for people looking to avoid THC altogether.

Can You Get High From Full-Spectrum CBD?

Even though it is federally illegal to sell CBD with more than 0.3% THC, there are unscrupulous CBD brands that may contain more than that amount. In that case, it would be possible to get high from full-spectrum CBD. You can avoid this pitfall by buying trusted brands with third party lab results for their products.

In states where recreational cannabis is legal, it’s also possible to find CBD products with higher concentrations of THC. That’s because these CBD products come from high THC content cannabis plants, instead of hemp.

Letters to Rev Random Home Breeding Questions

Yo, good peeps! Random home breeding questions are the flavor of today with Letters to Rev. Just a Q&A with yours truly regarding various breeding questions from home breeders. Grab some kick-ass genetics to breed with over at Kingdom Organic Seeds. Enjoy.

In the photo above, you can see a Vietnam Black (landrace) male clone, along with 2 clones of a single female Black Forrest female—yup—that’s EXACTLY what’s happening in the world of KOS right now.

Alright then, earthlings, let’s rock and/or roll with today’s “Letters” to Rev…

Home Breeding, Question #1: Virgin Breeder?

FROM: JCB

“Hey Rev, longtime fan here. I have been following your growing advice for a decade, and my gardens show it. I have become a really good indoor grower, and so I thought I might try my hand at making some of my own strains. My collection of seeds is nice, including several from KOS ? and I just wanted to hear your advice to me when doing this. Not getting into the seed business whatsoever; I just want to have some good strains that I made from my own favorites and have these strains reflect all my favorite things about those plants.

I know you have said often that plants I have bred in my own grow room will extra kick ass in that environment, and I like that a lot. Since my very first breeding run will be in about 30 days, I am just looking for any pearls of wisdom you might have for me. Thank you so much for what you do.”

Rev’s Answer to Q1
Good Skills for Rooting Cuttings is Essential for a Breeder
Good Skills for Rooting Cuttings is Essential for a Breeder

What an excellent adventure you are on, my friend. I am a huge fan of home breeding because I think you need a lot of semi-isolated gene pools turning out the (real) goods. If it all becomes too centralized with just several large breeders, it’s going to get very limited as far as diversity. Diversity… That’s the thing, amigo, and what I mean by that is mostly (the many many) different resin properties, especially as they relate to high type. Here’s the important things I would tend to if I were you…

La Home Breeding Bullet List…
  • Cloning Skills and Resources: You absolutely NEED to have or get this skill and have a dedicated space for it. If you are going to breed well, you must be able to root cuttings with at least an 80% success rate.
  • Growing Space Allotments: Whatever space you think you are going to need, triple it. It’s okay if you start out with space to spare, be happy. It won’t likely happen often, if ever again. Get your rhythm down, so you are sprouting, cloning, and flowering all at once in a perpetual cycle.
  • Familiarity: If you “get to know” the lineages/strains you are working with, it makes your life so much easier. Starting from scratch with essentially unknown genetics, you need to flower out and sample clones while saving clones of those plants. Then you can choose from what you absolutely know regarding who to breed with.
  • F2s are Your Friend: The F2 generation is where most of the magic happens. Use multiple males (F1 individuals) in the breeding of the F2 seeds. Isolating homo and hetero expressions are literally a matter of if you see it, you got it (homo/truebreeding) here almost always.
  • Intense Lighting: Sprout, vegetate, and flower all under intense lighting. You can use something like T5s to keep mother clones under as your weakest lighting.
  • Dry Erase Boards: These are super handy to have, hang them on opportune walls, and you’ll see what I mean. Observational notes are one thing I use these for.
  • Hash Making Skills: If you are making a lot of seeds, you can make a lot of killer hashish. You should get these skills baybee.
Home Breeding, Question #2: Soil Mix for Seeds?

FROM: Rob R.

“Hi, Rev. Hey, I was wondering if you could help guide me to the best way to germinate seeds for breeding purposes. I am a TLO (True Living Organics) grower, and last time I tried to pop seeds, they kind of fried. Is TLO soil too powerful for sprouting with? What should I use for this, anything special for sprouting? Thanks for your help in advance.”

Rev’s Answer to Q2

Hey Rob, sure thing man, I think I can help you out here. If you are sprouting seeds that were not bred/created using TLO soil, or another powerful living soil, then I would run the following…

  • 2-parts good, bagged soil mix (Ocean Forrest for example).
  • 1-part TLO soil mix.
  • 1-part compost/earthworm castings (optional).
  • A little extra perlite and vermiculite (optional).

I like to plant 16 seeds for any breeding run. You can normally (75%) find what you want using healthy good genetics to start with using this number. Also, you could use just straight Ocean Forest, or any G&B potting soil and others here. The thing is, you will want to get them “acquainted” with your TLO soil, and this mix does just that.

Home Breeding, Question #3: Male Breeding Space?

FROM: Coleen M.

“Hey ya Rev, hope you are well. Please share with me how you flower your males in tents. As in, do they get their own space like females do? I thought I remembered reading how you put males in the middle somehow? Thank you. I would like to use all my space for females since the males are so transitional.”

Rev’s Answer to Q3

Hells yeah, Coleen, love to share this with you. Okay, first of all I usually slow-down my males prior to flowering by putting them under weaker lighting, like T5s for example. Check out this photo…

Random Home Breeding

You can see in the photo above how that male is in just a 1-gallon container, while the females are in 3-gallon containers. I could have had that male in the center of four females just fine, no worries. In this case, the flowering tent is also being used for sprouting, but I’ll still have an open space when the male goes by-by. I just had that male under T5 lighting for about 10 to 15 days prior to warming it up for flowering lights. Delayed transplanting was also used to slow down the male(s).

Afterword

Whenever You are Multitasking While Home Breeding You Absolutely Need a T5 Zone
Whenever You are Multitasking While Home Breeding You Absolutely Need a T5 Zone

Being able to slow down some of your plants from time to time is a very good thing indeed. I just use two bedrooms to grow and breed at home; one room is all flowering and sprouting, while the other room is all mother clones, rooting clones, freshly rooted clones, and vegging plants about to flower. Everything works out well, especially when you can give yourself some breathing room when it comes to your timetable.

Grab a copy of my TLO book, and check out this old article about making hash: Making Hash from Cannabis the Easy Way– with Rev. Hope you all enjoyed today’s home breeding Q&A. L8r G8rs…
