General Cannabis Growing Question #1: Watering Routine?

“Hi Rev! Hey, could you do me a big favor please? Just run down in simple steps how you manage your plant water. I am having some problems running steady PPM and pH. Thank you!”

Rev’s Answer to Q1

This is My Eternal Tea Bubbler I Call the Churn and I Care Not About pH or PPM Here

Sure, Molly I’m happy to help. I have partied hundreds of times around La Jolla Shores and the Cove. Step ONE is ‘The Churn’ as seen in the above photo. Think of this as a “perpetual living tea” that needs to bubble for at least 24 hours before using, but I normally run mine for a whole grow or longer. Your PPM runs high in this container—but you don’t have to care how high the PPM is, or even about the pH, because this isn’t the water you use on your plants, not at this concentrated level at any rate.

With The Churn, it is important you are consistent with your additions. For example, to my 1-gallon Churn I add 2 oz. of fish tank water and 2 oz. of worm farm leachate, 1/8^th teaspoon of dolomite lime, and about 3 or 4 granules of Epsom Salts. If you don’t have a fish tank or a worm farm, no worries, use some alfalfa meal, and some dried fish meal, and a little bat/bird guano along with the dolomite lime and Epsom Salts. There are millions of good combos here, just use the same additions at the same ratios in The Churn for the entire grow. The microbial life in symbiosis with the plant will adapt.

I Add the Churn Water to the 5-Gallon Bucket of Groundwater Until it Reaches 60-65 PPM

The Process

The dolomite lime auto-buffers your pH towards 7.0 pH, and my Churn normally runs about 7.5 pH. I combine my dechlorinated groundwater (50 PPM in a 5-gallon bubbling bucket) with a little Churn water until my 5-gallon bucket water hits 60 to 65 PPM. I let that bubble for about an hour and then use it. Normally my end result plant water runs at 7.2ish pH and 60-64 PPM. The 5-gallon bucket is also on perpetual cycle, and I always leave just a bit in the bottom before refilling.

General Cannabis Growing Question #2: Hot and Humid Woes?

“I hope you can guide me here Rev. I used your advice heating my indoor garden slightly at night to combat high humidity in the cold wintertime. It worked just like you said, thank you. Where I live it is particularly humid all the time and very rarely is it low. In the summer months I run super-hot, and still humidity gets too high, especially some nights, while the temps are also very hot, and I can’t use heaters at night without getting big stretching and uber high temps. Even a dehumidifier causes too much additional heat in the garden on many summer nights. What’s my move here Rev? Gratitude.”

Rev’s Answer to Q2

Howdy, I get your boggle here fully. For reference here, 10 flowering plants about 3’ tall, can add 20%+ humidity to a 20’x20’ room no problem. That is a big factor of course here adding to your already high humidity. I noticed you never mentioned venting to me. Making sure you are sucking out enough of that garden humid laden air is critical, you may want to upgrade your air exchange. Your regular air movement inside the garden matters more than you may think here as well. I would make sure there are enough fans to keep the garden air moving around well at all times.

A portable A/C unit can work well here also. The downsides are they use a lot of wattage and amps. Just make sure and never aim the cool air anywhere near directly at any plants. When I have used this option in the past, I always aim the cool air output aiming up at the ceiling. A/C units also dehumidify.

I am struggling with my selection skills, and due to space restrictions the earlier I can thin the herd the better. Thank you so much for what you do and Happy New Year!”

Rev’s Answer to Q3

Happy New Year back at ya Bug. Ummm, a secret huh? Heh heh, okay, how about I give you a tip that is not common wisdom, yeah? Alright, one of the very important things to notice during the plant’s early growth (2 to 3 weeks old) is the water usage compared to the others. You can observe this fairly easily by simply measuring your water input, and see who runs out of water first and, how much faster.

I have never seen a truly epic selection that wasn’t also a severe water consumer. So, that’s a biggie for males or females. Beware of environmental influences as variables affecting your results. Things like plants closer to vents or fans, heat sources etc., can dry out faster due to those factors. The more data you can collect observing your plants, the better you can collate that information as it relates to better selections. Many cannabis expressions are variety/strain dependent, while others, like the water tip, relate to selection using all varieties of cannabis—the whole cannabis genome if you will.

Afterword

A bit more detail regarding my “perpetual” 1-gallon Churn, and my 5-gallon plant water containers. What I do is use them either about halfway down, and just refill with dechlorinated groundwater, or I at least leave about 1/5^th of the solution (the Churn and the 5-gallon) leftover and just build the new ones from there. This keeps my Microlife in those containers living and evolving/adapting to do even better jobs. Always keep a gallon of distilled water handy in case you run your PPM a little too high. Distilled water takes down PPM levels FAST!

During pre-pandemic times I was invited to speak at the Berlin Bar Convent in Germany on the topic of cannabis and beverages. One of the places I had to visit was the Berlin Wall. Why? Warren Bobrow: Where do you see cannabis legalization headed in NY? 

Sackville: In-roads are being made, we expect to see actual recreational retail stores start to open their doors around 2023, and New York will not step into the space quietly. What Is The Best Type Of Cannabis Legalization Model?

Cannabis prohibition is one of the most harmful public policies in modern human history. It’s a policy that has harmed countless lives directly and indirectly, and that harm lasts long after any initial charges or prosecutions occur. Thankfully, cannabis legalization is spreading across the globe, particularly in Europe.

At the end of last year, Europe witnessed its first country, Malta, passing an adult-use cannabis legalization measure. Multiple European countries are expected to legalize cannabis soon, possibly as early as this year. Those countries include Luxembourg, Germany, and Italy. The Netherlands and Switzerland are also pursuing legalization via pilot programs. Countries in other parts of the world, such as Thailand, Israel, South Africa, and Mexico, are also expected to pass and implement legalization measures soon.

Every country that has legalized nationwide so far did so using a legalization model that differs from the rest. Going forward, as more countries legalize cannabis for adult use, which model will they copy? Or will they each go in an entirely new direction?

Current Legalization Models

As it stands right now, only three countries have legalized cannabis for adult use on a national level – Uruguay, Canada, and Malta. Canada has the most comprehensive legalization model in that it includes storefronts, delivery services, and other ways for any person of legal age to acquire cannabis. Uruguay historically limited pharmacy and club sales to residents only, although that is changing. When Malta implements its model, it will only involve clubs as a means for people to acquire cannabis outside of cultivating it themselves or getting it gifted to them.

Malta’s model, and to a lesser extent Uruguay’s model, is not new. Cannabis is still prohibited nationwide in Spain; however, the ‘club model’ is already thriving in many parts of the country, particularly Barcelona, where we will be holding the world’s largest cannabis superconference in March. This legalization model involves private clubs where people sign up for a membership to access cannabis sales through the club.

The club model differs from the long-established (yet also technically illegal) coffee shop model in Amsterdam, where no membership fee is required. The club model is likely to be a much more popular model for many countries compared to the Amsterdam model. Whether Spain ultimately gets the credit for helping pave the way or not, it certainly deserves that credit.

Will Spain Ever Officially Legalize Its Cannabis Clubs?

Spain’s cannabis club model is popular with international lawmakers because it lowers the barrier to entry into the cannabis industry and ensures local access to products. It’s a model that doesn’t involve as much bureaucratic structure and regulations. Compared to Canada’s legalization model, it’s a fast and straightforward way to implement a legalized industry.

With Malta pursuing a club-based legalization model and similar clubs already existing in Uruguay, more countries will likely include club provisions in their own legalization models. If so, and Spain continues to cling to failed prohibition policies, it will be a sad irony that other countries will legally implement Spain’s model before Spain makes their clubs officially legal.

Many lawmakers and regulators in Spain seem to be complacent because cannabis is decriminalized in Spain, cannabis is easy to acquire, and enforcement is limited in many parts of the country. After all, being a cannabis consumer in Spain is a good gig by many measures. However, wherever prohibition still exists, it can still harm people, so legalization is still needed in Spain, whether it is merely legalizing the very popular club model or adding to it.

The Physicians CBD Council becomes the Medical Editorial Board of the new Journal of Cannabinoid Medicine that will be published and launched in 2022 by the Mace Media Group.

The Physicians CBD Council LLC today entered into an agreement with Mace Media Group to be the Medical Editorial Board and Peer Reviews of a new medical journal that will be published twice a year beginning in May 2022. The new Journal of Cannabinoid Medicine will cover exclusively research, studies and articles related to cannabis and its cannabinoid components.

Is CBD Legal in Minnesota?

Depending on Whom You Ask, the Answer May Surprise You. To Put it Simply: It’s Complicated.

On May 30, 2019, Gov. Tim Walz signed a law that allowed cannabinoids derived from hemp, like CBD, to be sold for human and animal consumption. Near the end of 2021 though, the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy released a report stating the sale of any cannabinoids or tetrahydrocannabinols coming from any type of cannabis plants was illegal under Federal and Minnesota State law only with certain exceptions. So which one represents the legal status?

 

The Exceptions allowed

The only CBD sales recognized by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy as being legal are those of that have been approved by the FDA, and thus must be obtained by a licensed pharmacy. These products, they point out, are regulated and permitted by the Minnesota Department of Health, and are therefore the only products that meet the standards of the 2019 law signed by Gov. Walz. The problem is that, at the time of this writing, the only CBD product that has been approved by the FDA is called Epidiolex, which is used to treat seizures. Any other CBD products would fall outside that definition, and consequently would be considered illegal.

 

The Government’s Response

With the release of the Board of Pharmacy’s report, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture began cracking down on the sale of CBD across the state. Cease and desist letters were mailed to CBD vendors statewide starting in late 2021. Brick and mortar vendors were severely hampered, but online vendors continued to thrive. Even today, there are still plenty of options t to purchase CBD online that are eligible to be delivered to Minnesota. Many of these CBD companies operate outside the Minnesota DOA’s jurisdiction, and will continue to do so until the legality is clarified.

 

Going Forward: Which Way is the Wind Blowing

The 2022 Minnesota Legislative Session is set to begin on January 31st, and this will surely be an issue that they will discuss. Based on what they decide, the question whether CBD is or isn’t legal in Minnesota with be determined much more clearly and concretely. Until then, it’s complicated.

What Is Cannabidiolic Acid and What Are Its Benefits?

Cannabidiolic Acid – or simply known as CBDA – is a compound produced by hemp and cannabis. Simply put, it is the raw form of cannabidiol (CBD).

 

The process

CBDA  is found in abundance in the many CBD variety plants, and later converts to the popular CBD when exposed to heat.

CBDA, together with other popular cannabinoid compounds like cannabichromenic acid (CBCA) and  tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) all stem from cannabigerolic acid. The conversion of precursor compounds depends on which plant enzymes are activated during the synthesis process.

During a process known as decarboxylation (a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group and releases carbon dioxide, which occurs when the cannabis plant is exposed to sunlight or heat), CBDA converts to CBD.

 

Where is CBDA used?

How does CBDA work to create medicinal benefits?

When looking at the scientific theory of cannabinoids and their processes, most bind directly with CB1 or CB2 receptors.

CBDA, on the other hand, interacts with a system known as endocannabinoid –  a biological system composed of endocannabinoids that binds cannabinoid receptors. It does so by inhibiting the COX-2 enzyme, which is associated with inflammation resulting from an injury or infection.

By blocking this enzyme, the CBDA relieves the inflammation.

New Study Finds Cannabis Compounds Fight COVID Infection

With COVID-19 still spreading and new variants outpacing vaccination rates, researchers are looking into alternative ways to treat and manage COVID. Recently, a group of researchers tested the potential of certain compounds found in the cannabis sativa plant for their potential in neutralizing the virus that causes COVID.

What they found was remarkable potential for treating and preventing COVID across all known strains. The cannabinoids, CBGA and CBDA both prevented the COVID virus from infecting healthy cells. [1]

 

Cannabis Compounds and COVID Protection

The authors of the recent study were looking for plant-based compounds that could bind to a protein on the COVID virus called a spike protein. The spike protein is used by the virus to bind to and infect healthy human cells. If a compound binds to the spike protein before it can attach to a cell, the virus become unable to cause infection. [1]

In their initial tests, the researchers placed a range of cannabinoids in a solution with the protein found in the COVID virus and the protein it binds to in human cells.  They found that CBDA, CBGA, and THCA all prevented the COVID proteins from binding to the cellular ones. [1].

From there, they continued their testing with only CBDA and CBGA because, “THCA-A is a controlled substance, insufficient quantities were available for determination of binding affinity or antiviral activity.” [1]

The researchers tested the infection-blocking capabilities of CBDA and CBGA with live SARS-CoV-2 virus and cells proven especially susceptible to infection.  Once again, they found that, “As in the pseudovirus neutralization assay, CBDA and CBGA prevented SARS-CoV-2 entry into Vero E6 cells…” [1]

In order to address the current and emerging variants of the COVID virus, the researchers also tested the cannabis compounds with several of the variants and found similar results. [1]

 

Will Consuming Cannabis Prevent COVID?

So, will consuming cannabis prevent COVID infection? Probably not. The research was conducted on CBDA and CBGA. These are the acids present in the cannabis plant prior to decarboxylation, the process of turning compounds like CBDA and THCA into the CBD and THC most people associate with cannabis. So, the usual methods of cannabis consumption probably won’t get you enough of the compounds in the study to make a difference in fighting COVID.

With that said, CBDA and CBGA are naturally present in cannabis flower before it is smoked or undergoes the process of decarboxylation for use in other products.  So, getting CBDA and CBGA from the cannabis plant shouldn’t be too difficult.  In fact, it should theoretically require fewer steps than extracting CBD for current products.

 

Potential for Future Treatments

More research is definitely needed, but the results are promising. If more research corroborates what this team found, it could point to a simple, natural way to fight COVID in addition to the existing vaccines and treatments.

Since CBDA and CBGA are found in the very same plants CBD is derived from, not only is the supply already readily available and well-tested for safety, it is legal on the federal level. Both compounds could be used in supplements much like CBD currently is, again allowing for a convenient and natural guard against the virus.
